Comments

Pößneck issued this second run of its Goethe-themed Notgeld series in 1921, during the period when German municipal emergency money had shifted from wartime necessity to something closer to a deliberate collector trade. By 1921, many towns were printing series specifically designed to be saved rather than spent — a practice the Reichsbank viewed with increasing hostility and eventually moved to suppress.

Johannes Arndt in Jena was a regional workhorse printer for Thuringian Notgeld, handling commissions from multiple surrounding municipalities during these years. Two printings of the same series from the same issuer within a short window typically indicate the first run sold out faster than anticipated.
