Süderbrarup is a small market town in Schleswig-Holstein, and this note is a product of the Notgeld wave that swept German municipalities between 1917 and 1922 when imperial and Weimar central authorities could not supply enough small-denomination coinage to meet everyday needs. Thousands of German towns issued their own emergency pfennig notes during this period; Süderbrarup was one of the smaller issuers, which tends to mean lower original print runs and genuine scarcity rather than the collector-targeted overproduction that plagued larger city issues.
