Egenbüttel is a small village in Schleswig-Holstein — its population at the time of this note's issue would have been in the low hundreds at best. That a rural community this size issued its own emergency currency is less surprising than it sounds: the Kleingeldnot of 1917–1921 pushed thousands of German municipalities, however minor, into printing their own Notgeld simply to make change when coins disappeared from circulation.
Konrad Hanf of Hamburg produced notes for numerous small north German issuers during this period, working at considerable volume on short turnaround. At 50 × 40 mm, this is among the smallest format issues in the entire Notgeld series.
