Worpswede was an artists' colony before it was anything else — established in the 1880s by painters who found the flat moorland north of Bremen more interesting than the academies of Düsseldorf and Munich. The Künstlerpresse Worpswede, the press that produced this note, was a direct product of that culture: a craft printing operation staffed by colony artists rather than a commercial banknote house.
This 25 Pfennig piece is Notgeld, emergency municipal scrip issued during the severe coin shortages of the early Weimar period. That it was designed by Walter Müller and printed locally rather than farmed out to a Leipzig or Berlin printer is the point — Worpswede's notgeld was a deliberate exercise in colony identity, collected as art objects even at the time of issue.
