Freienwalde in Pommern — not to be confused with Bad Freienwalde in Brandenburg — issued this note during the inflationary spiral that made Reichsbank coin essentially unspendable in circulation. German municipalities were legally permitted to issue Kleingeldersatz (small change substitutes) during this period, and hundreds did so, typically contracting provincial printers. The Görlitzer Nachrichten und Anzeiger was primarily a newspaper publisher, and Notgeld printing was a logical commercial sideline for any press with the right equipment in 1921–22.

The designer credit to Robert Koch is worth noting — uncommon for municipal Notgeld at this denomination, where artistry was usually an afterthought.
