Oberweißbach is a small village in the Thuringian Forest best known as the birthplace of Friedrich Fröbel, who invented the kindergarten. The municipality issued this Notgeld during the postwar small-change famine of 1921, when coin metal was being hoarded across Germany and even the most minor transactions required locally printed substitutes. The Wiedemannsche Druckerei in Saalfeld handled emergency currency for numerous Thuringian communities during this period — a regional print shop doing the work that the Reichsbank couldn't be bothered with at this scale.
