Dornburg am Saale — a small Thuringian town of no particular commercial weight — issued this note during the acute coin shortage that gripped Germany following the First World War. Municipal and local authorities across the country were legally permitted to fill the gap left by vanishing small-denomination metal coinage, producing what collectors now call Notgeld. The Dornburg series is among thousands of such issues from 1921, a year when inflation was accelerating but had not yet reached the catastrophic levels that would render all such notes worthless by late 1923.
The DeNG reference 281.1 suggests a single known variety for this denomination within the series.
