Ehrenbreitstein was absorbed into the newly expanded city of Koblenz in 1937, which gives these 1921 Notgeld issues a particular finality — the municipal authority that signed them no longer exists in any administrative sense. Bürgermeister Wagner's signature here represents one of the last decades of the town's independent civic identity.

Schaar & Dathe of Trier were prolific Notgeld printers, handling municipal emergency currency across the Rhineland during the postwar shortage of small coinage. Designer B. Auland is credited on the Ehrenbreitstein series, though attribution details beyond the name remain thin.
