Obverse description Central vignette shows a robed monk standing within a Gothic arched niche set against a stone masonry wall, holding a book and rosary cross; the arch bears the inscription 'Der Mönch von Münchenbernsdorf'. Denomination numerals '25' appear in framed cartouches at upper left and right. The lower portion carries the issue text, place and date 'Münchenbernsdorf i. Thür. den 1. September 1921', a facsimile signature of the Bürgermeister, and the bold letterpress legend 'Notgeld der Stadt — 25 Pfennig — Münchenbernsdorf' on a scroll banner.

Reverse description The upper half presents a humorous tavern scene captioned 'Die Kneipe nach der Sitzung', with four figures seated at a table being served by a waitress, rendered in fine letterpress line engraving against a yellow underprint with decorative border panels at left and right. Below the scene a two-line verse reads 'Bei ihm war es auch Sitt und Brauch, / Was eingeschenkt ist, trinkt man auch.' The lower register carries a bold black silhouette panorama of the Münchenbernsdorf town skyline with church spires, windmill, and factory chimneys, above the caption 'Münchenbernsdorf und die Sage vom Advokatensteig'; the printer's imprint 'Hofdruckerei Gerth & Oppenrieder, Gera-R.' appears in the bottom margin.

Comments

Münchenbernsdorf is a small market town in the Greiz district, and this note is one of hundreds of Thuringian municipal issues that flooded into local circulation during the 1921 small-change shortage — a direct consequence of postwar coin hoarding and metal scarcity. Hofdruckerei Gerth & Oppenrieder in nearby Gera handled a substantial volume of Notgeld commissions from smaller Thuringian communities during this period, which kept production costs low for towns with limited municipal budgets.

The DeNG reference suffix distinguishes individual notes within the Münchenbernsdorf series, suggesting the town issued at least four distinct pieces under this emergency authority.
