| Obverse description | Polychrome letterpress Notgeld note in the typical Harz series style, with the central field occupied by a silhouetted Harz mountain landscape at dusk against which two figures — one in red costume evoking Mephistopheles, the other a dark silhouette — stand in direct reference to Goethe's Faust, Part I. A profile bust portrait of Goethe enclosed within a laurel wreath appears at centre with the inscription 'Goethe' below, while the denomination 'Fünfundzwanzig Pfg.' is rendered in Gothic script along the lower field. Bordered panels at the foot carry the issuing authority, place of issue 'Schierke i. Harz', date '1. April 1921', and redemption conditions, with the printer's imprint 'LOUIS KOCH · HALBERSTADT' at the base. |
