Detmold's municipal notgeld issues of 1920 belong to the second wave of German emergency money — by this point, the Reichsbank's coin shortage had dragged on long enough that town councils across Westphalia and Lippe were printing their own fractional currency as a matter of routine administrative necessity. The Magistrat here acted under the same broadly tolerated legal ambiguity that allowed hundreds of German municipalities to issue without formal central authorization.
Small-denomination Detmold pieces from this period are common in intact dealer lots but frequently turn up with vertical fold damage — these circulated hard in a town of under 15,000 people with limited banking infrastructure.
