Auerbach im Vogtland is a small textile-manufacturing town in what is now Saxony, and like hundreds of German municipalities in 1920, its district association resorted to printing its own fractional emergency currency — Kleingeldscheine — to plug the coin shortage left by wartime metal requisitioning and postwar hoarding. The Reichsbank had largely ceased producing small denominations in metal, and the gap was filled by a chaotic proliferation of local issues with no central coordination.

At 43 × 32 mm, this is among the smallest format notes produced during the Notgeld wave. Tiny enough to lose in a coat pocket, which many did.
