Dommitzsch, a small town on the Elbe in Saxony-Anhalt, issued this note during the acute coin shortage that plagued Germany in the early Weimar period. Municipal and commercial Notgeld of this type was authorized informally — there was no central registry, no federal oversight, and no guarantee of redemption beyond the issuing authority's word. For a town of Dommitzsch's size, that word carried limited weight beyond the immediate locality.
The 1920 issues from smaller Saxon municipalities were frequently printed in short runs and redeemed quickly, which paradoxically made them attractive to the collector-driven Serienscheine market that had already begun distorting actual circulation patterns by mid-1920.
