Speicher is a small municipality in the Eifel region of Rhineland-Palatinate, and this 25 Pfennig note is a product of the Notgeld wave that swept Germany between 1919 and 1922. With the Reichsbank unable to supply adequate small-denomination coinage — hoarded, melted, or simply absent from circulation — thousands of towns issued their own emergency paper. Speicher was one of the smaller communities to do so, which generally means lower print runs and, consequently, harder survival today.
