Canth — today Kąty Wrocławskie in Lower Silesia, Poland — was a small Silesian market town whose municipal savings bank joined thousands of German local authorities in issuing Kleingeldersatz during the acute coin shortage of 1920. The Reichsbank had effectively lost control of small-denomination currency supply by then, and the vacuum was filled by a chaotic patchwork of municipal, commercial, and corporate notgeld, some professionally printed, some barely so. Grube & Schneider in nearby Freiburg in Schlesien handled this series, which accounts for the relatively tidy production quality typical of a local job printer with a consistent municipal client base.
