Buxtehude issued this 25 Pfennig Notgeld in 1919 as the postwar coinage shortage left German municipalities scrambling to fill the gap left by hoarded metal currency. The town — a small Hanseatic settlement near Hamburg — had no particular monetary infrastructure of its own, which is why the printing was contracted to Gebrüder Jänecke in Hannover, a commercial firm that handled a substantial volume of municipal emergency issues across Lower Saxony during this period.

Designer Jon. Grossmann is credited on the note — unusual enough to be worth flagging, since many Notgeld of this type carry no attribution at all.
