| Obverse description | Plain cream paper ground with an overall fine lace-like guilloche underprint. The heading "Gutschein der Stadt St. Goarshausen" is set in bold Gothic blackletter at the top, above the large denomination numeral "25" and the legend "Pfennig" in matching script. A red serial number appears in the centre field. Sankt Goarshausen sits directly across the Rhine from Sankt Goar, at the foot of the Loreley cliff — a town whose entire economic identity in the early 1920s depended on Rhine tourism and ferry traffic. The Magistrat issued this 25 Pfennig note as part of the broader Kleingeldersatz wave that swept German municipalities when wartime coin hoarding and postwar metal shortages made small change functionally unavailable. Local authorities had no legal mandate to issue currency but did so anyway, and Reich authorities tolerated it out of necessity.
The Grabowski-Siemsen reference S13.1c distinguishes this as a specific printing variant within the Sankt Goarshausen series — minor but cataloguable differences that matter primarily to specialist collectors of Rheinland Notgeld.
