Vilasar de Mar, a small coastal town north of Barcelona, was among hundreds of Catalan municipalities that issued their own emergency small change during the early months of the Spanish Civil War. The collapse of metallic coinage circulation in 1936 created an immediate practical crisis at street level, and local syndicates, unions, and ayuntamientos filled the void with cardboard and paper tokens of their own design. Sindicato Vilasar was almost certainly a local CNT-affiliated trade union body — the anarcho-syndicalist movement dominated much of Catalonia's organizational infrastructure during this period.
The AL catalog number places this within the broader Altaya-Llistosella reference system for Catalan civil war local issues. Nearly all such pieces were printed in tiny quantities, circulated hyperlocally, and redeemed — or simply abandoned — within months.
