Pick 81 was issued by the Spanish Republic shortly after its proclamation in April 1931 — the monarchy had collapsed, Alfonso XIII had left the country, and the new government needed a functioning currency infrastructure almost immediately. The FNMT in Madrid had been producing Spanish banknotes for decades and remained the sole domestic printer throughout the transition.
The word "replica" in the catalog name warrants scrutiny. Modern reproductions of this type circulate among collectors and must be checked carefully against known paper weight and the characteristic letterpress impression of FNMT production from this period.
