Lopera is a small municipality in Jaén province, Andalusia, and this note is a product of the fractured monetary reality of Republican Spain during the Civil War. When the Nationalist advance disrupted normal banking and coin supply in 1936–37, hundreds of local Republican committees — many with no financial expertise whatsoever — issued their own emergency scrip. The Comité del Frente Popular de Lopera was one of them.
The official stamp is the only anti-counterfeiting measure, which tells you everything about the circumstances of production. These local emissions were often printed on whatever card or heavy paper was available, not purpose-made banknote stock.
Survival rates for Lopera issues are low — the town changed hands during the war, and scrip from the losing side had no redemption path.
