Spain's peseta coinage ended on December 31, 2001, when the currency ceased to be legal tender ahead of the euro's physical introduction in January 2002. This silver piece belongs to the final year of peseta production — a deliberate collector issue rather than anything that saw a cash register. The Royal Mint had been producing commemorative silver 25-peseta pieces throughout the Juan Carlos I era, largely outside the circulating series, which ran in aluminum-bronze.
