By the time these were struck, the peseta had fewer than two years left as legal tender. Spain's adoption of the euro on January 1, 1999 had already made the currency a countdown proposition, and this 2000–2001 issue represents one of the final minting runs before the peseta was demonetized on February 28, 2002. Coins from this period circulated hard and briefly — everyone knew they were temporary.
