Additional information

Equatorial Guinea gained independence from Spain in October 1968, and this issue is part of the country's first coinage series — struck just two years into existence as a sovereign state. The UN theme reflects the diplomatic campaign the new government was actively waging to secure international recognition and development aid during a period when Francisco Macías Nguema was consolidating what would become one of the most brutal dictatorships in postcolonial African history.

The .999 fine silver specification was almost certainly driven by collector and bullion markets rather than any domestic monetary function. Few of these ever circulated in Equatorial Guinea itself.
