Reverse description The reverse features a colorized panoramic composition commemorating Napoleon's exile on Saint Helena. At upper left, a color-printed scene depicts a solitary figure of Napoleon standing on a rocky coastal promontory overlooking the sea. To the upper right, a raised oval cameo portrait shows Napoleon in military uniform with epaulettes and decorations. In the lower field, an engraved architectural rendering of Longwood House, Napoleon's Saint Helena residence, is prominently displayed. The legend THE NAPOLEONIC WARS arcs across the upper field with ornamental flourishes, and TWENTY FIVE PENCE appears in the lower exergue.

Additional information

Saint Helena issued this piece to mark the bicentenary of Napoleon's arrival on the island — though he didn't reach Saint Helena until 1815, making 2013 an odd commemorative anchor. Napoleon spent the last six years of his life at Longwood House under British supervision, dying there in 1821 under circumstances still debated: arsenic poisoning from wallpaper dye, deliberate administration, or gastric cancer, depending on which forensic study you credit.

Silver-plated copper-nickel is a pragmatic choice for a territory of roughly 4,000 people with no mint of its own.
