The wirebird — Saint Helena's critically endangered plover — has teetered on the edge of extinction for decades, with wild population counts dropping below 200 at their lowest point in the early 2000s before conservation efforts on the island's central flax plains began to show measurable recovery. Saint Helena's coins rarely see significant circulation given the island's tiny permanent population, which means aluminium bronze pieces from this series typically survive in condition far better than their nominal face value would suggest warranted.
