Saint Helena's Bird Life series was issued partly in response to growing philatelic and numismatic interest in the island's endemic and migratory species, with the Storm Petrel selected for its deep association with the South Atlantic — sailors historically regarded the bird as a harbinger of bad weather, its name derived from St. Peter's supposed ability to walk on water. The island's remote position, roughly 1,200 miles from the nearest landmass, made it a natural stopover and nesting site for several petrel species.
KM#37 is a low-mintage circulation-format issue in a series that attracted more collector than commercial attention.
