Obverse description Unadorned bust of King Olav V facing left, rendered in high relief with closely combed hair swept back from the brow. The portrait is of a plain, medallic character with no legends or inscriptions in the field, occupying the full diameter of the flan. The effigy is executed in a clean, modernist sculptural style characteristic of mid-twentieth century Scandinavian coinage design.

Additional information

Trial strikes from Den Kongelige Mynt are almost never released through official channels, and this piece is no exception — Rønning catalogues it as P103, placing it firmly in the pattern and prøvemynt category rather than any approved production run. Olav V had only recently acceded following Haakon VII's death in September 1957, making 1958 a natural year for the mint to test revised coinage dies bearing his effigy before committing to full production runs.
