Obverse description The obverse displays the Mexican national coat of arms at center, depicting an eagle perched upon a cactus and grasping a serpent in its beak, rendered in high relief against a plain field. The central device is framed by a rectangular border ornamented with a repeating pre-Columbian stepped-fret motif. The arc legend ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS curves along the upper portion of the field above the coat of arms. Below the central frame, two additional lines of legend read 1/4 ONZA DE ORO and LEY 0.999, denoting the coin's gold content and fineness.
