| Obverse description | The obverse features Arnold Machin's celebrated second portrait effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, depicted as a right-facing draped bust wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara. The legend ELIZABETH II is inscribed along the upper left periphery, with D·G·REGINA continuing along the upper right, all in raised Latin lettering. The date 1971 appears in the lower field beneath the truncation of the bust.
