Obverse description Printed in purple and grey on cream paper, the obverse carries a large Gothic script denomination legend 'Fünfundzwanzig Mark' across the top, beneath which a central diamond-shaped vignette portrays Saint Reinold (Reinold der Kirchenbauer) alongside a group of medieval stonemasons at work, with two large circular numeral '25' medallions flanking the vignette left and right. Below the central design, a cursive text block names the paying municipal and district cashiers of Dortmund and Hörde, followed by the issue date 'Dortmund am 10. Oktober 1922' in a ruled panel, and the issuing authority line 'Für die Stadt- und Landkreise Dortmund und Hörde: Der Magistrat der Stadt Dortmund' above two manuscript signatures and the circular embossed seal of the City of Dortmund. Marginal legal text runs along all four borders citing the imperial law authorising the issue.

Dortmund's Magistrat issued this note under the authority covering both the city and the surrounding Landkreis Hörde — an administrative pairing that reflected the heavy industrial integration of the Ruhr at the time, before Hörde was formally incorporated into Dortmund in 1928. The printer, West-Werbe-Dienst, was an advertising and commercial print house rather than a specialist currency printer, which was entirely typical of the Notgeld boom of 1922 when municipal treasuries turned to whoever had a press.

Inflation was accelerating fast enough by mid-1922 that 25 Mark denominations, once significant, were becoming transactional small change within weeks of issue.
