Banque du Liban has issued a long-running series of large-format silver collector pieces tied to Lebanese institutional landmarks, and this entry belongs to that program. The Lee Observatory at the American University of Beirut was established in the late 19th century, funded by a donation from the Lee family of Massachusetts, and was among the earliest astronomical observatories in the Arab world. It housed a Clark refractor telescope and conducted serious observational work before Beirut's light pollution rendered it effectively obsolete for research.
