| Obverse description | Central motif depicts the historic Friday Mosque minaret (Hukuru Miskiy) of Malé, rendered in relief atop a traditional Maldivian dhow viewed from the side, with a decorative rope-and-knot design in the lower field. The Gregorian year '2008' appears to the left of the minaret and the Hijri year '١٤٢٩' (1429) to the right, both along the upper field. The issuer's initials 'MMA' are inscribed in the field, referencing the Maldives Monetary Authority. |

The brass-plated steel variant replaced the earlier nickel-brass composition as a cost-cutting measure adopted by numerous small island economies in the 2000s, when rising base metal prices made solid alloy coinage economically unsustainable for low-denomination issues. The magnetic property is the easiest field distinction between the two types — collectors frequently find unsorted lots containing both.
