Croatia's 25 kuna denomination was conceived specifically for commemorative purposes and never circulated as an ordinary transaction coin. This 2002 issue marks the tenth anniversary of international recognition of Croatian independence, which came in January 1992 when the European Community formally acknowledged the breakaway from Yugoslavia — a decision Germany pushed through over the hesitations of several member states.
