Steinwald is a small rural commune in the Hausruckviertel district of Upper Austria — exactly the kind of locality that issued emergency paper money (Notgeld) during the severe coin shortages that followed the First World War. Austrian Notgeld of this type was typically authorized at the municipal level from around 1919 onward, as the collapse of the Habsburg monetary system and postwar hoarding stripped everyday small change from circulation almost entirely.
