Ootje Oxenaar's design for this note broke sharply from the conservative engraved portraiture that had defined Dutch banknote aesthetics for decades. His approach was graphic rather than academic — flat planes of colour and bold typography over finely cross-hatched vignettes — and it divided opinion at De Nederlandsche Bank when the series was first proposed.

The Sweelinck series ran through the 1970s until superseded by Oxenaar's even more radical designs of the following decade, which would cement his international reputation as one of the most influential banknote designers of the twentieth century.
