Curaçao was sighted by Spanish explorers in 1499 — exactly five centuries before this issue — during an expedition likely led by Alonso de Ojeda and accompanied by Amerigo Vespucci. The Spanish initially dismissed the island as an *isla inútil*, worthless for gold, and used it primarily for livestock before the Dutch West India Company seized it in 1634 and recognized its deep-water harbor as one of the finest in the Caribbean.
The Netherlands Antilles issued this coin just nine years before the political restructuring that would dissolve the Antillean federation entirely in 2010.
