Binéfar, a small agricultural town in Huesca province, fell under anarchist collectivization almost immediately after the July 1936 uprising. The CNT-FAI communities that took control of the Aragonese countryside frequently issued their own local scrip denominated in units other than pesetas — "grados" being one of the more unusual systems adopted, likely tied to labor time or commodity value within the collective rather than to any fixed monetary standard.
These emergency emissions had no backing authority beyond the collective itself and were typically invalidated when Republican central government forces moved to reassert economic control over Aragon in 1937.
