Banque de la Réunion held no independent printing capability — its notes were produced by the Banque de France in Paris, using the full technical apparatus of a central bank press. Clément Serveau was a prolific designer of French colonial currency in this period, and Jules Piel and Georges Hourriez were both staff engravers at the Banque de France, so the production quality consistently matched metropolitan standards rather than the cheaper lithographic work common among competing colonial issuers.
The date range spans the fall of France and the Vichy period, during which Réunion remained under Vichy administration until 1942, when the island rallied to the Free French. Notes from this series circulated through that transition without reissue.
