Aruba's 1994 oil-themed commemorative references the island's single most consequential industrial episode: the operation of the Lago Oil & Transport Company refinery at San Nicolas, a Standard Oil subsidiary that at its Second World War peak was the largest oil refinery in the world and a primary fuel source for Allied operations in the Atlantic theater. The refinery closed in 1985, leaving San Nicolas economically hollowed out for years.
