Reverse description Rectangular silver planchet with a rope-style border. The legend CITTÀ DEL VATICANO is prominently inscribed across the upper field, flanked by decorative diamond ornaments. Occupying the left portion of the field is a large color-printed reproduction of a medieval Nativity scene, rendered in rich blues, golds, and earth tones, depicting the Virgin Mary adoring the Christ Child in a manger, with attendant figures and a luminous star in the night sky. To the right, a finely struck relief of a dove in flight — symbolizing the Holy Spirit — dominates the right field beneath the legend IN NATIVITATE DOMINI. The denomination EU 25 RO appears below the dove, flanked by the mint mark R, with the date MMXXII and the engraver's signature P. DANIELE AV inc. in the lower exergue.

Additional information

Vatican commemorative issues are produced under a formal agreement between the Holy See and the Italian Republic, with annual mintage strictly capped — the 2022 Christmas release was available exclusively through Vatican philatelic and numismatic offices, meaning virtually no examples entered circulation in any conventional sense. The rectangular format, unusual for coinage, places this piece in a category the Vatican has used selectively for high-value commemoratives since the early 2000s.
