| Reverse description | A winged Genius, personifying science and liberty, stands facing in the centre of the composition holding a lightning bolt aloft in one hand before a classical temple fitted with a lightning rod — an allusion to Franklin's famous electrical experiments. At the Genius's feet lie a broken crown and shattered sceptre, emblems of tyranny overcome by reason and republican ideals. The Latin legend ERIPUIT COELO FULMEN SCEPTRUMQUE TYRANNIS, drawn from Turgot's celebrated epigram and widely disseminated in France from 1778, arcs around the upper field. The denomination 25 EURO appears in the lower field, accompanied by the inscriptions SCULPTSIT ET DICAVIT / AUG . DUPRE ANNO and the Roman date MDCCLXXXIV (1784), referencing Dupré's original medal. |
