Reverse description The reverse bears a portrait of Queen Jelena Slavna, the 10th-century Croatian queen renowned as a protector of the poor, widows, and orphans, her likeness derived from historical stone epitaph fragments discovered at Solin (ancient Salona). The effigy is rendered in a style evoking medieval commemorative art. The inscription KRALJICA JELENA SLAVNA arcs along the upper field, while the historical date ANNO DOMINI 949. is inscribed in the lower field, referencing the year associated with her reign.

Additional information

Queen Jelena, known as "Slavna" (the Glorious), ruled Croatia in the late tenth century as regent following the death of her husband, King Mihajlo Krešimir II, and is one of the very few medieval Croatian rulers commemorated by a contemporary inscription. A stone tablet discovered near Solin in 1891 — the so-called Epitaph of Queen Jelena, dated 976 AD — records her patronage of two churches and her role sheltering orphans and widows. That inscription remains one of the earliest surviving documents naming a Croatian queen by title.

This issue is among the first Croatian gold coinage denominated in euros, reflecting the country's January 2023 adoption of the single currency.
