Reverse description A crowned and enthroned effigy of King Dom João I of Portugal, robed and holding a sceptre in his right hand, seated in full frontal facing position on an ornate throne. To his left and right appear heraldic shields — the Portuguese arms and a shield with a crown — flanking the royal figure. The legend '1385 D. JOAO I 1985' arcs across the upper field, while 'CORTES DE COIMBRA' is inscribed in large letters around the lower portion of the border. The engraver's signature 'C. MENERES' and the mint mark 'incm' appear in the lower exergual area. The design commemorates the 600th anniversary of the Cortes de Coimbra of 1385, at which João I was acclaimed King of Portugal.
