| Reverse description | The reverse presents a seated frontal effigy of King João I of Portugal, depicted enthroned in medieval royal vestments, wearing a crown and holding a sceptre in his right hand. To either side of the throne stand two heraldic banners: the banner of Portugal to the left and a crown device to the right, all rendered in a bold, sculptural low relief by engraver Clara Menéres. The upper legend reads '1385 D. JOAO I 1985' in an arc, flanking the crowned royal figure. The words 'CORTES DE COIMBRA' are inscribed vertically along the left and right borders respectively, and the mint mark 'INCM' and engraver's signature 'C. MENERES' appear in small characters in the lower field. |
