Obverse description The Portuguese national coat of arms, depicting the traditional shield charged with five escutcheons in cross formation each bearing five bezants, surrounded by a border of seven castles, is displayed prominently in the lower central field. Behind and above the shield rises a stylized wave or flame motif, evoking the spirit of national renewal associated with the Carnation Revolution. The dual commemorative dates 1974 and 1984 flank the design in the lower field, marking the tenth anniversary of the revolution. The circular legend REPUBLICA PORTUGUESA arcs across the upper periphery, separated by ornamental stops. The engraver's signature HELDER BATISTA and the mint mark INCM appear discreetly in the lower left field.
