Reverse description The reverse presents a bold abstract geometric design representing the intersection of Portugal and Europe: a grid of raised square or rectangular tiles fills the central field, with the left portion rendered in a curved, shield-like form suggesting the Portuguese national shield, merging into a broader rectangular European grid motif. The legend PORTUGAL*EUROPA curves along the upper periphery in raised Latin capitals, with the date 1986 inscribed prominently in the upper central field beneath the legend. The engraver's monogram of Armando Matos Simões appears discreetly in the field adjacent to the word EUROPA. The INCM mint mark is also present in the field.
