Reverse description Left-facing portrait bust of Catalan composer and pianist Enric Granados dominates the left portion of the field, rendered with fine detail including his characteristic full moustache and swept hair. To the right, a Romantic scene evocative of his celebrated piano suite Goyescas is depicted, showing elegantly draped figures beneath an open parasol, one reclining and two standing, set against the suggestion of a piano keyboard along the lower register. The composer's birth and death years 1867 and 1916 are inscribed to the lower left, while the legend ENRIC GRANADOS is prominently displayed across the lower field. The engraver's initials BS appear in small characters at the bottom centre of the field.

Additional information

The ECU — European Currency Unit — was a basket currency and accounting tool, never intended for circulation, which made it an attractive vehicle for commemorative programs throughout the 1980s and 90s. Spain's series used the denomination to highlight cultural figures, and Granados was an apt selection: the Catalan composer died in 1916 when the Sussex, the ship carrying him home after the New York premiere of his opera Goyescas, was torpedoed by a German U-boat in the English Channel. He had delayed his return specifically to attend a White House recital for Woodrow Wilson.
