Additional information

Bonifacio, the southernmost town in Corsica, maintained a semi-autonomous commune under Genoese protection for centuries — a civic independence fierce enough that local confraternities became the genuine institutional backbone of the town long after Genoese authority faded. The Confréries Bonifaciennes, a confederation of these brotherhoods, issued this ecu as part of the 1990s French regional ecu movement, in which hundreds of municipalities, chambers of commerce, and local associations struck silver pieces denominated in the pre-Maastricht European currency unit.

The "2A" designation reflects Corsica-du-Sud's French departmental code, not a die or series variant.
