Additional information

Jacob van Campen designed Amsterdam's Town Hall — now the Royal Palace on Dam Square — completed in 1655 and widely regarded as the most ambitious civic building project in the Dutch Golden Age. The ECU itself never became circulating currency; it remained a unit of account that was folded into the euro conversion process and abandoned entirely in 1999. Pattern strikes in this series were produced in strictly limited numbers for collectors and diplomatic presentation, distinct from the standard proof issues.
