Additional information

The ECU — European Currency Unit — was never legal tender in the Netherlands or anywhere else, but the Dutch Treasury produced these silver pieces as collector issues tied to the broader push toward European monetary integration that culminated in the Maastricht Treaty, signed in February 1992, just months after this coin was struck. Erasmus was a natural choice: born in Rotterdam around 1469, he spent his career moving between courts and universities across Europe at a time when such mobility was exceptional, making him a credible emblem of continental unity.

The X# prefix in Krause indicates a non-circulating issue outside the main national series.
